Creality Ender 3 V3 SE: Still the Best Budget Printer in Australia?
Harry S.
The Budget King Gets an Upgrade
The Creality Ender 3 is one of the most influential FDM printers ever released. Since the original model launched, it has introduced countless makers to 3D printing thanks to its affordable price point, huge community support, and endless upgrade potential. The downside was that earlier Ender 3 models often required significant tuning and modification before consistently producing excellent results.
The Ender 3 V3 SE is Creality’s attempt to modernise that experience while still keeping the printer affordable and beginner friendly. Instead of expecting users to immediately upgrade the machine themselves, the factory now includes many of the most important improvements.
What Makes the V3 SE Different from Older Ender 3 Models
Two of the biggest improvements on the V3 SE are the direct drive extruder and the CR Touch automatic bed levelling system. The direct drive setup places the extruder motor directly on the print head instead of feeding filament through a long Bowden tube. This dramatically improves control over flexible materials such as TPU and makes retraction tuning much easier for materials like PETG.
The CR Touch probe also removes one of the biggest frustrations beginners traditionally faced with older Ender printers. Instead of manually adjusting the bed repeatedly with paper and levelling knobs, the printer automatically measures multiple points across the build surface and compensates for small inconsistencies during printing. Combined with the flexible magnetic PEI build plate, the overall first layer experience is significantly more user friendly than earlier Ender 3 generations.
Print Quality at the Price
For a machine in its price range, the V3 SE produces impressively strong print quality with standard materials like PLA and PETG. PLA prints cleanly at moderate speeds with smooth surfaces and reliable layer adhesion, making it an excellent everyday printer for hobby projects, prototypes, and functional parts. While the machine can push higher print speeds, vibration artefacts such as ringing become more noticeable once speeds climb aggressively beyond the machine’s comfort zone.
For most real world printing, this is not a major issue. The V3 SE still delivers excellent results for the majority of beginner and enthusiast level applications without requiring advanced tuning. PETG also performs well on the machine when paired with proper cooling and filament drying. See our PETG profile for V3 SE. Flexible materials such as TPU become far more approachable thanks to the direct drive extruder design. TPU profile for V3 SE. ABS is possible in controlled conditions, but like most open frame printers, the V3 SE performs best with lower warp materials unless an enclosure is added. See our ABS on V3 SE guide.
The Klipper Upgrade Path
One of the strongest advantages of the Ender ecosystem is the enormous community surrounding it. The V3 SE works well with Klipper firmware upgrades using devices like the Creality Sonic Pad, allowing users to use advanced features such as input shaping, pressure advance, and faster printing without having to replace the whole printer.
For users who enjoy experimenting and upgrading their machines over time, the V3 SE offers a very flexible platform with a giant range of community guides, modifications, and tuning resources already available online. This upgrade potential is one of the reasons the Ender platform remains so popular even as newer printers enter the market.
Who Should Buy It?
The Ender 3 V3 SE is best suited for beginners wanting an affordable and capable first printer, hobbyists looking for a reliable PLA and PETG machine, or makers who enjoy upgrading and customising their printers over time. It offers a much more approachable out of box experience than older Ender generations while still retaining the flexibility and community driven nature that made the series so popular in the first place.
For users primarily focused on engineering materials such as ABS, ASA, or fibre reinforced composites, a fully enclosed printer will generally provide a better long term experience, so the Creality K1 or Bambu P1S is more appropriate. However, for everyday FDM printing at an accessible price point, the V3 SE remains one of the strongest value options available.
