Wiring

Safety basics for blades and heat tools

  • Blades: cut away from your body, keep your free hand behind the edge and replace blunt blades early. Store knives and picks out of reach of children.
  • Hot nozzles: a heated nozzle causes serious burns. Keep fingers clear of the heater block and wear eye protection when brushing off residue.
  • Soldering irons and insert tips: always use a stand, let tips cool before swapping them and work with good ventilation.
  • Crimpers and cutters: keep fingers out of the jaws and disconnect power before working on any wiring.

What tools do I need for my first 3D printer?

Start with flush cutters for supports, a trimming knife or deburring tool for brims and edges, cleaning needles that match your nozzle size and hex keys that fit your printer's screws. Add files, tweezers and a PTFE tube cutter as you go. The finishing tool kit and Nozzle Care Kit handle the cutting, trimming and nozzle cleaning jobs in two items.

Which tools fix a clogged nozzle?

Cleaning needles clear partial and full clogs from inside a heated nozzle, and a brass wire brush removes baked on residue from the outside. The Nozzle Care Kit includes needles in 0.2, 0.4 and 0.6mm with the brush, and individual needle packs go up to 1.0mm. Our maintenance tools page has the full step by step routine.

Do you sell tools for fitting heat set inserts?

Yes. The Soldering Iron Adapter Kit for Plastic Heat Inserts has brass adapters for M2 to M8 inserts and suits most soldering irons, though you should compare its listed sleeve measurements with your iron first. The inserts themselves are in our knurled brass inserts range. The adapter gets extremely hot in use, so let it cool before touching it.

Are these maker tools useful beyond 3D printing?

Very much so. The heavy duty flush cutter is made for electronics and hobby work, trimming wire and zip ties as well as supports. The deburring tool is designed for steel, aluminium and plastic, the anti-static tweezers suit modelling projects, and the Iwiss crimpers take on automotive, marine and battery wiring.
