Choosing 3D printed vases and home decor

Vases are the biggest group in this range, from ribbed fins and fluted folds to bubble textures and sculptural busts. Many work as decor on their own, so think about where the piece will sit and what it will hold: fresh flowers, dried stems or nothing at all. Lamps and lighting come a close second, followed by planters, bookends and shelves, and candle holders.

Check measurements on the product page before you buy. As a guide, the Coral Reef Fluted Vase stands approximately 22.5cm tall, while the Tribal Woman Bust Flower Vase is a compact 108 x 93 x 150mm tabletop piece.

Using vases, lamps, candles and planters safely

Vases and fresh flowers

Some designs make fresh flowers easy. The Coral Reef Fluted Vase hides a centre cavity sized for a standard drinking glass, so you can drop in a glass of water and your stems. For other vases, follow the liner advice in the FAQs below. Dried and faux arrangements need no liner at all.

3D printed lamps

Printed shades are plastic, so they need a bulb that runs cool. Stick to low-heat LED globes, and check the product page for the fitting and what comes in the box.

Candle holders

Use LED tealights or LED candles in printed candle holders, not real flames, unless the product page says otherwise. A flame sitting close to PLA+ can soften or damage the print.

Planters

Check the listing for drainage or a saucer before planting directly into a pot. The Puffer Jacket planter, for example, comes with a saucer. Where there is no drainage, keep the plant in its nursery pot inside the planter and tip out any water that pools. PETG planters such as the Hexa handle moisture better than PLA+.

Caring for 3D printed home decor

  • Dust with a soft, dry cloth.
  • If water gets inside a vase, dry it out. The care notes for the Tribal Woman bust recommend drying the inside after fresh flowers to keep the print looking sharp.
  • Keep PLA+ pieces off hot windowsills and away from heaters, and do not leave them in a parked car.
  • For bathrooms and other damp spots, choose pieces printed in PETG. Many of our bathroom pieces, such as toothbrush cups and toilet roll holders, are printed in PETG.

Vases, lamps and planters FAQs

Are 3D printed vases watertight?

Do not assume so. Printed vases are built up in thin layers, and tiny gaps between those layers can let water seep through. Unless the product page says a vase is watertight, put a glass or plastic liner inside for fresh flowers. It protects your furniture, and a liner is easy to lift out, clean and refill.

Which light bulb should I use in a printed lamp?

We recommend low-heat LED bulbs for every printed lamp and shade. Incandescent and halogen globes run much hotter and can soften PLA+ over time. Check the product page for the fitting and whether a cord set or bulb is included before you order, and if a pendant is going to be wired into your ceiling, have a licensed electrician install it.

Can I use a 3D printed planter outdoors?

We suggest keeping PLA+ planters indoors or in a shaded, sheltered spot, since strong sun and heat can soften them and affect the finish. PETG planters cope better with water and warmth, making them the better choice for a covered balcony or a humid bathroom, but check the product page before leaving any printed pot in full sun.

How do I clean ribbed or textured pieces?

Dust settles into ribs, flutes and lattice patterns, so a soft, dry cloth or a clean, soft paintbrush works best. For marks, use a slightly damp cloth and let the piece dry fully. Avoid the dishwasher, hot water and harsh cleaning products, which can warp or dull printed plastic, especially PLA+.
