Choosing through-hole components
Through-hole parts have leads that pass through a circuit board or plug straight into a breadboard, which makes them the easiest parts to prototype with, solder by hand and replace in a repair. Every product below lists its values in the variant picker, with a spec table for each family.
What each component does
| Component | What it does | Common uses |
| Metal film resistors 1/4W 1% | Limits current and sets voltages | LED current limiting, pull-ups, voltage dividers |
| Electrolytic capacitors | Stores charge and smooths voltage | Power supply filtering, decoupling, audio coupling |
| Rectifier, Schottky and switching diodes | Lets current flow one way only | Reverse polarity protection, flyback diodes, rectifiers |
| TO-92 transistors | Switches or amplifies a signal | Driving relays and LEDs from a microcontroller |
| IRF720 MOSFET, TIP42C | Switches higher currents and voltages | Motor drivers, power supplies, high side switching |
| BT169 SCR and BT131 triac | Latching switch for DC or AC loads | Crowbar protection, dimmers, AC switching |
| WH148 potentiometers | Adjustable resistor on a knob | Analogue inputs, volume and speed controls |
| 5mm LEDs | Light source for indicators | Status lights, signs, 3D printed lamps |
Tips for getting it right
Reading resistor values
Our resistors are listed by decade range first, then value, so 4.7k sits under "1k to 9.1k". In part numbers and on schematics a letter often replaces the decimal point: 4K7 means 4.7 kilohms and 2R2 means 2.2 ohms. Our SKUs follow the same convention.
Capacitor voltage ratings
Choose a capacitor rated comfortably above the voltage it will see: 16V or 25V on a 5V or 12V rail, 50V on 24V. Electrolytics are polarised, so the stripe on the can marks the negative lead.
Transistor pinouts
TO-92 pinouts differ between families. BC and 2SA/2SC parts are usually C-B-E, while 2N and S8x/S9x parts are usually E-B-C, viewed from the flat face. Check the part guide on the transistor page before soldering.
Buying electronic parts from OzFDM
Every part is sold individually, so you can pick up two resistors or two hundred without buying a kit full of values you will never use. Orders ship from our Bibra Lake store in Perth, and orders over $299 ship free Australia-wide (excluding PO Boxes).
Electronic components FAQs
Why are your resistors metal film rather than carbon film?
Metal film resistors hold a tighter 1% tolerance and are quieter than 5% carbon film parts, so the value on the label is the value you get. The price difference at single quantities is small, and they work anywhere a carbon film resistor would.
Which transistor should I use to switch a relay from an Arduino or ESP32?
A BC547, 2N3904 or S8050 NPN transistor with a 1k base resistor handles a typical 5V or 12V relay coil. Add a 1N4148 or 1N4007 diode across the coil to absorb the voltage spike when it switches off.
What resistor do I need for an LED?
On a 5V supply, 220 to 330 ohms suits red, yellow and green LEDs, and 100 to 150 ohms suits blue and white. On 3.3V, use roughly half those values.
Do you sell component kits?
Not yet. Every value is sold individually so you only pay for what you use. Tell us which kits you would like to see and we will look at adding them.
Are these genuine branded parts?
These are standard commodity components from the same factories that supply most hobby electronics worldwide. Where a part is a specific manufacturer item, such as the TDK PS1240 buzzer, we say so on the product page. For general purpose resistors, capacitors and jellybean transistors the part number is the specification.
Can I get the same parts in bulk?
Yes. Every component is sold per piece with no minimum, so order as many as you need. If you are after reel quantities or a value we do not list, contact us and we can usually source it on the next order.
Do you stock SMD components?
The range is through-hole first because that is what most 3D printer, Arduino and repair projects use. A small number of surface mount parts, such as the UA78L05 in SOIC-8, are listed where there is demand. Let us know what you would like to see.
