Buying Filament in Bulk: Volume Pricing, Full Cartons and Trade Accounts Explained

OzFDM PLA+ 1.75 mm filament, 1 kg roll in Light Blue

Written by James Hill

Quick answer: OzFDM takes 5% off 3 or more filament rolls, 10% off 6 or more and 15% off 12 or more, in any mix. Twelve rolls of the same product and colour count as a full carton and get 20% off. Discounts apply automatically at checkout. Businesses buying 360+ rolls of one SKU can apply for a trade account.

Volume pricing went live on 7 September 2026. There is no code to enter and no minimum spend: add the rolls to your cart and the discount appears against each line. This guide explains exactly how the tiers and full cartons work, runs through real cart examples using PLA+ at its current price, and covers when a trade account is the better option.

How OzFDM volume pricing works

The discount is based on how many filament rolls are in your cart. Every roll counts towards the tier, whatever the material or colour, so a roll of ASA and a roll of PLA Basic both add one to the count. The tiers are:

Rolls in the cart Discount PLA+ price per roll (normally $21.95)
1–2 None $21.95
3–5 (any mix) 5% $20.86
6–11 (any mix) 10% $19.76
12 or more (any mix) 15% $18.66
Full carton: 12 of the same product and colour 20% $17.56

The discount is worked out per roll and rounded to the cent, so a cart total can be a cent or two away from simply taking the percentage off the subtotal. Prices in this guide were checked in September 2026. If a price changes, the percentages stay the same.

Full cartons and remainders

A full carton is 12 rolls of the same variant, for example 12 rolls of PLA+ in Black. Those 12 rolls get 20% off instead of the mixed tier. If you add more of the same colour than fills a carton, the extra rolls on that line drop back to the mixed tier for the cart. Buy 15 rolls of PLA+ Black and 12 get 20% off while the other 3 get 15%, because the cart holds more than 12 rolls. Buy 24 and you have two full cartons.

Twelve rolls of PLA+ split across two colours is not a carton. It still gets 15% because the cart holds 12 rolls.

What is not part of volume pricing

Value packs, such as the 4 kg Matte PLA Cool Tones Pack, and other bundles are already priced as a set, so they sit outside volume pricing. Volume pricing and trade account pricing are also not combined. More on trade accounts below.

Worked examples with real cart totals

These carts use 1.75 mm PLA+ Filament, 1 kg at $21.95 a roll. We ran each one through the store's own checkout calculation in September 2026, so the discounts shown are what the cart applied, including the per-roll rounding.

Cart Rolls Before discount Discount applied You pay Average per roll
Black, White and Red, one of each 3 $65.85 5%: $3.27 $62.58 $20.86
Black, White and Red, two of each 6 $131.70 10%: $13.14 $118.56 $19.76
Black, White, Red and Blue, three of each 12 $263.40 15%: $39.48 $223.92 $18.66
12 Black (full carton) 12 $263.40 20%: $52.68 $210.72 $17.56
12 Black plus 5 White 17 $373.15 20% on the carton, 15% on the rest: $69.13 $304.02 $17.88

Example 1: three rolls to try some colours

Three rolls in three colours takes $3.27 off. It is a small saving, but it is automatic, so it is worth knowing that a third roll moves the whole cart into the first tier.

Example 2: six rolls for a month of printing

At six rolls the discount doubles to 10% on every roll. The jump from five to six rolls is where the tier pays for itself: five rolls at 5% cost $104.30, while six rolls at 10% cost $118.56, so the sixth roll adds only $14.26.

Example 3: twelve mixed rolls

Twelve rolls across four colours gets 15% off every roll, a saving of $39.48. The same effect applies again here. Eleven rolls at 10% cost $217.36 and twelve rolls at 15% cost $223.92, so the twelfth roll effectively costs $6.56. If you are sitting on 10 or 11 rolls, add the colour you know you will use next.

Example 4: 17 rolls with a full carton

This is the cart where the carton rule matters. Twelve Black rolls make a full carton and get 20% off, which is $52.68. The five White rolls are the remainder of the cart, and because the cart holds 17 rolls they get the 15% mixed tier, which is $16.45. The total discount is $69.13.

If the same 17 rolls were spread across colours with no full carton, every roll would get 15%, a discount of $55.93 and a total of $317.22. Building the order around one carton of your most-used colour saves a further $13.20. This cart also clears the $299 free shipping threshold, which a 12-roll PLA+ cart does not reach even before discounts.

Volume pricing across other materials

The same percentages apply to every filament roll. The table shows the approximate price per roll at each tier for some of the most popular lines. The cart rounds each roll's discount, so expect differences of a cent.

Filament (1 kg) Normal price 3+ rolls (5%) 6+ rolls (10%) 12+ mixed (15%) Full carton (20%)
PLA Basic, Black $15.95 $15.16 $14.36 $13.56 $12.76
PETG Basic $17.99 $17.10 $16.20 $15.30 $14.40
PLA+ $21.95 $20.86 $19.76 $18.66 $17.56
PETG+ $22.95 $21.81 $20.66 $19.51 $18.36
ASA $29.95 $28.46 $26.96 $25.46 $23.96
PETG-CF $39.95 $37.96 $35.96 $33.96 $31.96

PLA Basic colours other than Black are $16.95. Because the tiers count rolls rather than dollars, mixing a few engineering rolls into a PLA order still lifts the whole cart into the higher tier.

When a trade account makes more sense

Volume pricing suits anyone paying by card at checkout. A trade account is built for organisations that go through filament in volume and need to buy the way a business buys: print farms, resellers, schools and manufacturers.

What an approved trade account includes

  • 30-day payment terms: check out without paying on the spot. The order is invoiced and you pay by bank transfer within 30 days.
  • Purchase order numbers: add your PO number at checkout and it carries through to the order and the invoice.
  • Bulk buy discount: 20% off when you order 360 or more rolls of a single 1 kg filament SKU, meaning the same material and colour. Sample packs and bundles are excluded. For scale, 360 rolls is 30 full cartons.
  • Restock requests: the trade portal has a form to tell us which filaments and colours to prioritise in upcoming restocks.

How to apply

Fill in the form on the trade account page. Applications are usually reviewed within one to two business days. Once approved you get an email confirmation, and when you sign in with that email your account checks out on trade terms automatically.

Trade pricing and volume pricing are not combined. If you are unsure which suits your order pattern, email sales@ozfdm.com.au before you place a large order.

A few practical checks before you bulk buy

  • Buy what you will print. A carton only saves money if you get through it. Filament that sits open in a humid shed for a year costs you in failed prints.
  • Plan storage. OzFDM PLA+ arrives vacuum-sealed with desiccant, so unopened rolls store well. Once opened, keep rolls in airtight bags or containers with desiccant and dry them before critical prints.
  • Carton your standard colours, mix the rest. Most print farms run a handful of core colours. Put those in cartons and let accent colours ride on the mixed tier.
  • Check the cart before paying. Each line shows its discount, so you can confirm a carton has been recognised before you check out.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need a discount code for volume pricing?

No. Volume pricing and the full carton discount are applied automatically in the cart and at checkout. Each line shows the discount it received.

Can I mix materials to reach a tier?

Yes. Any mix of filament rolls counts towards the 3, 6 and 12 roll tiers, so PLA, PETG, ASA and engineering filaments all add to the same count. Only the full carton discount needs 12 rolls of the same product and colour.

What happens if I buy 13 rolls of one colour?

Twelve of them form a full carton and get 20% off. The thirteenth roll gets the mixed tier for your cart, which is 15% because the cart holds more than 12 rolls.

Can I use volume pricing and trade pricing on the same order?

No, the two are not combined. The trade account bulk discount is 20% off 360 or more rolls of a single SKU, and trade accounts also add invoice terms and purchase order support.

Do value packs count towards volume pricing?

No. Value packs and bundles are already priced as a set, so they are not part of volume pricing and are not counted towards the tiers.
