  Retraction Note

  • 0.8 mm is enough on the direct drive Nextruder. Fix ASA stringing by drying the roll, not by lengthening retraction.

Printing Notes

ASA is our outdoor material: UV and weather resistant, with 19 – 20 kJ/m² impact strength and an 88 °C heat deflection temperature.

Print ASA enclosed, as OzFDM and Prusa both recommend, in a well-ventilated room because ASA releases fumes. Without an enclosure, use PrusaSlicer's draft shield and keep the XL away from fans, open windows and air conditioning.

The XL's bed reaches 120 °C, the top of ASA's range. It heats only the tiles under and around your parts, so a small part warms an enclosure less; close the enclosure and let it warm up before you start.

Multi-tool: keep ASA jobs to ASA, or ASA with HIPS supports. PLA and PETG need much cooler beds, and PrusaSlicer warns when the bed temperatures in one job are far apart. The default minimal purge for non-PLA materials is 35 mm³.

Slicer: PrusaSlicer with the Prusa XL printer profile and a 0.4 mm nozzle. Dry the filament at 80 °C for ≥ 5 h before a long print; every figure above assumes dry filament.

Troubleshooting

Corners lifting or cracks between layers: Draughts or a cold room. Close the enclosure or use a draft shield, hold the bed at 110 °C and add a brim.

Weak layer bonding: Too much cooling. Drop the fan to 15 % and keep the nozzle at 250 – 260 °C.

Bubbling or a rough surface: Damp filament. ASA's moisture absorption is 1 % (23 °C, 24 h), so dry it at 80 °C for at least 5 hours.
