Retraction Note

  • PETG strings more than PLA. Raise retraction in 0.2 mm steps to no more than 1.2 mm, because too much retraction causes clogs.

Printing Notes

PETG Basic comes on a slimmer spool that some AMS units do not recognise during automatic loading. Move it onto an AMS-compatible reusable spool, or feed it from the external spool holder.

PETG bonds very strongly to smooth PEI. Print on the Textured PEI Plate, or use a thin layer of glue stick as a release layer on smooth PEI.

No enclosure is needed. Keep the door closed in a cold or draughty room, and open it on hot days so heat does not soften PETG in the extruder.

Bambu Lab's filament guide lists 240 – 270 °C for PETG, above OzFDM PETG Basic's 220 – 240 °C range, so change the nozzle temperature before slicing. A heat deflection temperature of 74 °C suits parts that sit somewhere warm.

Slicer: Bambu Studio. Start from the Generic PETG filament preset and set the temperatures above. Every figure assumes dry filament, so dry at 70 °C for 5 h before a long print.

Tested on our Bambu Lab X1 Carbon with a 0.4 mm nozzle, September 2026.

Troubleshooting

Stringing and blobs: Dry the roll at 70 °C for 5 h first, then drop the nozzle to 230 °C. Tune retraction last.

First layer too squashed or rough: Slow the first layer to 15 mm/s and check the plate type selected in Bambu Studio matches the plate fitted, since bed temperature is set per plate type.

Parts split between layers under load: Cooling is too high. Drop the fan to 30 % and raise the nozzle 5 °C, staying at or below 240 °C.
