Quick answer: Most first-time buyers in Australia should start with a Bambu Lab A1 mini or A1. For ASA, ABS or carbon fibre blends, choose an enclosed printer such as the Bambu Lab P2S, Prusa Core One+ or Elegoo Centauri Carbon. For large parts or engineering materials, look at the Bambu Lab H2 series or Creality K2 Plus.

This is our maintained buyer's guide for Australian makers, last updated in September 2026. OzFDM sells filament and maker hardware, not printers, so these picks are based on what each machine is built to do. We have left prices out because they change often and vary between Australian sellers, so check the current price, warranty terms and who handles repairs before you buy.

The best 3D printers by buyer need

First printer on a budget

The Bambu Lab A1 mini is still the easiest first printer for most people. It is an open-frame bedslinger with a 180 × 180 × 180 mm build volume, automatic bed levelling and Z offset, and a 300°C nozzle, and it works with the four-spool AMS lite if you want colour later. The Bambu Lab A1 takes the same approach with a 256 × 256 × 256 mm build volume and a 100°C bed for larger PETG parts.

The Flashforge Adventurer 5M is an open-frame CoreXY alternative with a 220 × 220 × 220 mm build volume, a quick-release nozzle and a 280°C hotend. If you already know you want an enclosure, the Elegoo Centauri Carbon is the budget pick, with a 256 × 256 × 256 mm build volume and a 320°C hardened steel nozzle.

Best all-rounder

For one printer that handles everything from PLA to ASA, the Bambu Lab P2S is the one to beat. This enclosed CoreXY printer has a 256 × 256 × 256 mm build volume, a 0.4 mm hardened steel nozzle, a 110°C bed, a 5-inch touchscreen and an activated carbon filter, and the Combo adds the AMS 2 Pro with filament drying. It has no chamber heater; fans and sensors manage the air inside instead.

The Bambu Lab P1S is still in production and remains a sensible cheaper option with the same build volume, but it has a stainless steel nozzle, so budget for a hardened one before printing carbon fibre. If you value open-source firmware and repairability, look at the Prusa Core One+ (Gen 2): an enclosed CoreXY with a 250 × 220 × 270 mm build volume and active chamber temperature control up to 55°C.

Enclosed printers for ASA, ABS and carbon fibre

ASA and ABS shrink as they cool, and draughts cause warping and split layers, so an enclosure makes a big difference. Carbon fibre and glass fibre blends wear through brass and stainless steel nozzles, so you also need a hardened nozzle (see our hardened nozzle comparison).

A passive enclosure like the P2S, P1S or Centauri Carbon is enough for ASA, ABS, PETG-CF and ASA-CF. For nylon, polycarbonate and other high-temperature filaments, a heated chamber helps: options include the Bambu Lab X2D (up to 65°C), Prusa Core One+ (up to 55°C) and Creality K2 Pro and K2 Plus (up to 60°C).

The X2D pairs a direct drive main nozzle with a Bowden-fed auxiliary nozzle that switches mechanically, so it can print PVA or breakaway supports without the purge waste of a single-nozzle swap. Our P1S, X1C, P2S and X2D comparison shows where it fits.

Multi-colour printing

Automatic filament changers differ in how many spools they hold, whether they dry filament, and how much waste each colour change creates.

  • Bambu Lab A1 mini and A1 with AMS lite: four spools on an open stand, and the simplest way into multi-colour.
  • Bambu Lab A2L: a large open-frame bedslinger (330 × 320 × 325 mm) launched in June 2026. The Combo includes the AMS lite, and it can run up to four AMS units plus an AMS lite for 19 colours.
  • Bambu Lab P2S Combo: the AMS 2 Pro holds four spools and dries filament at up to 65°C.
  • Elegoo Centauri Carbon 2: adds the four-colour CANVAS system and a 350°C nozzle to the enclosed Centauri design.
  • Creality K2 series: the CFS supports up to 16 colours across four units.
  • Prusa MK4S and Core One+: the MMU3 handles five filaments, and Prusa's INDX toolchanger for the Core One+, with up to eight tools, is now shipping.

Larger or more serious use

  • Bambu Lab H2S: single nozzle, 340 × 320 × 340 mm, a 350°C hotend and a 65°C heated chamber.
  • Bambu Lab H2D: two nozzles, a 350°C hotend, a 65°C heated chamber and optional laser modules. It runs in our own print farm.
  • Bambu Lab H2C: Bambu's Vortek system of six swappable hotends prints up to seven materials with far less purge waste than a single-nozzle printer.
  • Creality K2 Plus: 350 × 350 × 350 mm, a 350°C nozzle and a 60°C heated chamber.
  • Prusa Core One L+ and Prusa XL: 300 × 300 × 330 mm and 360 × 360 × 360 mm. The XL is a toolchanger and also runs in our farm.

What matters when you compare printers

Enclosure

An enclosure keeps the air around the print warm and still, which ASA, ABS and nylon need, and filtered enclosures help manage fumes. The trade-off is heat: PLA softens at relatively low temperatures, so on a hot day an enclosed printer can get warm enough inside to cause clogs. Follow the maker's advice on opening the door or lid for PLA. If you only print PLA and PETG, an open-frame printer is fine, and you can build an enclosure later.

Bedslinger or CoreXY

A bedslinger moves the bed back and forth, which is simple and affordable but limits acceleration before ringing appears. A CoreXY printer moves a light toolhead in X and Y while the bed only moves down, so it prints faster with cleaner surfaces. See our CoreXY vs Cartesian deep dive.

Direct drive extruder

A direct drive extruder sits on the toolhead right above the hotend. The short filament path makes TPU far easier to print and gives more precise retraction. It is now the norm on consumer printers, so this mainly matters when buying an older or second-hand machine. Our direct drive vs Bowden guide explains the difference.

Automatic bed levelling

Every printer in the table measures its own bed, using force sensors, strain gauges, load cells or nozzle pressure sensing, and most set the Z offset automatically. That removes the most common beginner problem, a first layer that won't stick. It's still worth learning what a good first layer looks like; our bed levelling guide shows you.

Multi-material systems

An AMS, CFS, CANVAS or MMU unit adds cost, desk space and another mechanism to maintain. Buy one if you want multi-colour prints, soluble supports or a backup spool that takes over when one runs out; otherwise choose a printer that can add one later. Consistent, neatly wound filament matters more here, because poor spools jam.

Ecosystem lock-in

Bambu Lab printers are the most polished out of the box, but hotends, AMS units and many spare parts are Bambu-specific, and remote features run through Bambu's cloud. Since Bambu's January 2025 authorisation firmware, third-party slicers such as OrcaSlicer send jobs through Bambu Connect, or directly when the printer is in LAN only mode with Developer Mode on. Prusa sits at the other end, with open-source firmware and slicer and step-by-step repair guides in the Prusa Knowledge Base. Every printer in this guide takes standard 1.75 mm filament, so you are never tied to the maker's own.

Noise

No printer is silent: fans, motors, filament cutters and purge moves all add up. Decide where the printer will live before you buy; a ventilated spare room or workshop beats a bedroom.

Spare parts and warranty in Australia

Nozzles, build plates, PTFE tubes, belts and fans all wear out. Before you buy, check who sells those parts in Australia and whether warranty repairs are handled locally. Businesses selling to Australians must follow the Australian Consumer Law, but the ACCC notes that remedies from overseas businesses can be hard to get, and goods sent through a parcel-forwarding service are not covered.

What about the X1 Carbon and older printers?

Bambu Lab ended X1 Carbon production on 31 March 2026, with firmware feature updates until 31 May 2027 and parts and support until 31 March 2031. What to buy with your first printer

  • Filament: two or three rolls of PLA Basic while you learn, and PETG Basic for tougher parts. Any mix of three or more rolls gets 5% off automatically at checkout.
  • Dry storage: filament absorbs moisture, especially in humid parts of Australia. See our filament storage guide.

Frequently asked questions

What is the best 3D printer for a complete beginner in Australia?

For most beginners, the Bambu Lab A1 mini or A1. Both level themselves, set their own Z offset and print PLA and PETG reliably with little setup. Choose the A1 for larger parts, or the A1 mini if desk space is tight.

Do I need an enclosed 3D printer?

Only if you plan to print ASA, ABS, nylon or polycarbonate regularly. PLA, PETG and TPU print well on open-frame printers. If you expect to make outdoor parts for Australian sun and heat, an enclosed printer such as the P2S or Centauri Carbon saves an upgrade later.

Should my first printer be a multi-colour Combo?

Only if colour is the main reason you're buying. A filament changer adds cost and more to learn, and single-nozzle systems waste filament at every swap. Many people start in one colour and add an AMS lite or AMS 2 Pro later, which the A1 series and P2S both support.

Can I use OzFDM filament in a Bambu Lab, Prusa or Creality printer?
